Why We Love Squarespace for Building Client Websites

We all know the importance of a great website. And if you need a reminder as to why a great website is so important, here are a stats few that might surprise you:

  • 38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content/layout is unattractive (source). Is your website visually pleasing?
  • After reaching a company's website via a referral site, 50% of visitors will use the navigation menu to orient themselves (source). Does your navigation menu make sense? Or is it overwhelming and confusing to new visitors?
  • Once on a company's homepage, 86% of visitors want to see information about that company's products/services (source). Is your homepage doing a good job of pointing people to your offerings and explaining what you do?
  • Mobile devices now account for nearly 2 of every 3 minutes spent online (source). Is your website mobile friendly?
  • 47% of website visitors check out a company's products/services page before looking at any other sections of the site (source). Are your product and service pages easily accessible? Does the layout and content on those pages encourage people to make a purchase?

Just like photographers have a preference in cameras and golfers have a preference in clubs, business owners and website designers have a preference in website platforms. For me, that preference is Squarespace. I'm such a fan of this platform that I not only use it myself, but I highly recommend it to every design client I work with. So what's so great about Squarespace and why should you get on board with this platform? Here are my reasons.

As a designer, it only seems fitting to start by highlighting the clean, streamlined appearance of each Squarespace site and template. Squarespace does a fantastic job of designing each template to look beautiful while still maintaining versatility and customization. If you're just starting out and may not have the funds to invest in a custom designed website, the gorgeous design of Squarespace templates will give you the appearance of a professional from the start. And for those of you who have been in business for years and are looking for a way to streamline all of the bits and pieces of your existing website, the clean design of a Squarespace site can help you create that cohesive, effortless vision that you're seeking.

This point is HUGE, especially for the not-so-technically inclined. My clients love Squarespace because after our project ends, they take over their websites and find that Squarespace is very easy to work with.

During our website design and development process, we finish the project with a Squarespace tutorial that shows them how to use the basic features (i.e., a blog on Squarespace, edit and update content, add images/text, etc.). This tutorial lasts about 45-minutes to an hour and in that time, we can cover everything they will need on a day-to-day basis to continue running their website on their own.

This means that clients can essentially do whatever they want on their own. They no longer have to depend on a developer (like me!) to make simple changes. There is also much less confusion for my clients since they aren’t stressed out about touching code and the possibility of wiping their site clean. In my opinion, that sense of self-sufficiency cannot be understated.

In an age where everything is becoming more mobile, it's crucial that businesses have a site that appears correctly on tablets and smartphones. Thankfully, Squarespace has us covered. Each of their templates is compatible across all platforms. So the next time someone pulls up your site from their iPhone or iPad, your website will remain intact and look just as great as the web version.

Who wants to track down a hosting site, buy a domain name, and search for a theme for your website separately? Not to mention the frustration and hassle of keeping up with it all and renewing subscriptions and payments to several different sites and companies. With Squarespace, a custom domain name and hosting service are included in your monthly plan. You also have the option of setting up a personal email address that corresponds with your domain name through the Squarespace platform (i.e dana@graycapitalsolutions.com).

Squarespace forms also easily connect to MailChimp and Google Docs. For Squarespace e-commerce sites, Stripe, Apple Pay, and PayPal are available to process payments, and ShipStation makes printing shipping labels and sending shipment notifications a breeze. Everything is all in one convenient, organized place with Squarespace.

People often talk about the limitations built into Squarespace and there are a relatively small number of templates to choose from but this works for me and my clients.

It’s widely acknowledged that having too much choice will make people unhappy which is why I like that Squarespace forces us to build and design within the confines of their templates. This stops me and my clients from constantly overthinking and tweaking every aspect of their website, and it also gives the project clearer finish lines and boundaries.

Even though Squarespace websites have to be built with templates, there is a lot of creativity and customization that can be done that many clients do not even realize. For example, this website pictured currently uses the [  ] template and I’ve managed to make it unique and true to their brand. If you look for Pacific in the template library you’ll see that it is actually under the Restaurant section (and not under the Businesses section where many people think to look first). By comparing template features and functionality and picking the right template for your needs, Squarespace has you covered.

That being said, it’s important to remember that Squarespace does offer the Developer Platform which lets experienced site owners and administrators make changes directly to the code of their template if they need it. Most of my clients do not need this but it’s good to know that it’s there for them if they do.

With plans ranging from $8 a month to $24 a month, Squarespace has very affordable prices. Each plan includes 20+ pages and galleries, 2+ contributors, fully integrated e-commerce, 500+ GB bandwidth, 2+ GB storage, a mobile website and store, a free custom domain, and 24/7 customer support.
